Cummings Charges Towards Christmas Cup 2014

Anthony Cummings will use a run at Rosehill on Saturday to see if his progressive stayer Barge And Charge is up to a run over the mile and a half in the 2014 Christmas Cup seven days later on Villiers Stakes Day.

The Stratum five-year-old has won up to 1850m but is as yet to race further than 2000m.

He gets the chance to do so this weekend in Sydney with Cummings saddling up the gelding in the $85,000 Goldners Horse Transport BenchMark 75 Handicap (2400m).

Barge And Charge has won four of his 15 starts to date but is yet to be tested in black type company.

His last win was over 1500m at Randwick’s Kensington track on October 6 with Tye Angland, back in the saddle this weekend, guiding him to a narrow victory over Bracteate in a no maiden wins showdown.

His latest start was in a BenchMark 80 over 1800m at the same track on November 22 with James McDonald riding him to a fourth behind Resurrect.

The course was chopped up that day and favoured the on-pace runners like Scott Aspery’s winning God’s Own gelding Resurrect who posted his third straight Sydney win this time in.

Cummings then is hoping at Rosehill on Saturday Barge And Charge will get a chance to show his true ability and handle his maiden 2400m assignment.

He will carry the 59kg top weight, equal with the Chris Waller-trained Tenacitus, and face a credible field of gallopers including Michael Moroney’s last start Warwick Farm winner Habitual Offender.

If successful then Cummings will put him on the short seven day back-up into the $100,000 Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) at Royal Randwick on December 13, which would be the horse’s first black type start.

“If he runs well over the distance then he will back up in the Christmas Cup on Villiers day,” Cummings confirmed to AAP.

Cummings also has Drago and Surge Ahead racing in two other races at Rosehill this weekend with an eye on Saturday week’s feature race, the $175,000 Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on the agenda for he stable mates if they can win this Saturday.
