Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
The final field of three-year-old fillies facing off in the Mode Plate 2014 in Brisbane on George Moore Stakes Day this Saturday is now out with the top rated hope being the Tony Gollan-trained Hijack Hussy.
Group 1 winning local horseman Gollan has triple representation in the $100,000 Listed Shelley Dale OHS Mode Stakes (1200m) this year, the likely favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au being his in-form Hussonet filly Hijack Hussy.
She’s after her third straight win following victories over 1400m at the Gold Coast in October and most recently the Listed Lexus Hybrid Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day, November 4.
Shooting for successive stakes wins then, Hijack Hussy drops back from 1400m to 1200m and will have Timothy Bell aboard from barrier eight in the place of Michael Rodd.
Bell was aboard for her Gold Coast win two back when drawn wide in barrier 10 of 11, Hijack Hussy now shooting for her second win from four starts at Doomben.
Gollan’s other runners are then Mossman filly Frilly Curtain for Jim Byrne in barrier nine and Tina Melina who also shoots for three on the trot.
Coming up trumps with the inside alley with Tegan Harrison to ride from barrier one, lightly-raced Jet Spur filly Tina Melina has just her fourth career start here after winning her past two over the track and distance in November.
Harrison was aboard for both those wins, the most recent of which was on November 22 when beating home Lush Belle by three quarters of a length in the $65,000 Courier Mail + Members QTIS Handicap (1200m).
Runner-up that day Lush Belle is also back looking to turn the tables in the Mode Plate, the Gillian Heinrich-trained Gold Coast visitor yet to finish out of the money.
She won her opening three career starts with a successful Ipswich debut in May followed by back-to-back Gold Coast wins back home this spring before her second to Tina Melina.
This weekend she has Ric McMahon in the saddle for the first time and jumps from barrier seven, her widest draw yet.
The other best runner in the Courier Mail + Members QTIS Handicap backing up on Saturday is then the Paddy Cunningham-trained third placegetter Shinji.
Apprentice Priscilla Schmidt has the ride on the Grafton-based Falvelon filly who did well from the outside barrier 14 draw last time out, her luck only slightly better with barrier 10 for this weekend’s run.
Along with Gollan’s stable mates Hijack Hussy and Tina Melina there are two other last start winners in the Mode Stakes field this year with Girls Command (barrier five) and Rich Reward (barrier six).
The Michael Nolan-trained Court Command filly Girls Command is in town from Toowoomba where she won over this distance on November 22 on the back of a fifth when stepped up to a mile.
She also ran over the mile here at Doomben on November 1 when seventh to Punta Norte and should appreciate a shorter run for her Brisbane return.
Rich Reward has Michael Cahill booked for the ride in the Mode Stakes, the Real Saga filly having won over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast during the winter before coming back at Gatton a fortnight ago for another win this time in a Class 1 over 1100m.
Other notable Mode Stakes hopefuls this year include Lancaster Stakes winner at the track and distance from May Tales Of Fashion, Kris Lees’ in-form Sydney-trained Nadeem filly Savoureux and progressive Gold Coast performer Fell From Heaven.
