Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Chris Waller’s visiting Sydney stayer Moriarty is sure to firm in the markets for Saturday’s Kingston Town Classic 2014 in Perth after coming up trumps with barrier three.
The Clodovil seven-year-old is one of a capacity field of gallopers facing off in the $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) this year, the weight-for-age feature set to light up Ascot Racecourse this weekend.
Moriarty made his WA debut last start on November 22 in the state’s richest race, the $1 million Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m), and flashed home late to cross just three-quarters of a length off the winner.
That was from a wide barrier 15 of 16 draw but this weekend he’s likely to jump from the inside alley with Kingston Town Classic barriers one and two drawn by the last two emergencies Red Blast and Real Love respectively.
Hong Kong’s Douglas Whyte takes over in the saddle of the Kingston Town Classic betting favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au and whether he adopts the same get-back tactics from the alley could be key to Moriarty’s chances.
With the emergencies taking up three of the top four barriers, the next best drawn is the Adam Durrant-trained Mr Moet.
The 2011 Railway Stakes winner is drawn in barrier five, which could become two if all four spares don’t gain a start.
Daniel Staeck has the ride on the Mosayter seven-year-old who is out to improve on a luckless 14th in the Railway Stakes last time out.
Railway Stakes winner Elite Belle meanwhile is back after the coveted Group 1 Perth double last achieved by Sniper’s Bullet (2009), Grant Williams’ in-form Canny Lad mare drawn in barrier 10 with Peter Hall to ride.
Hall takes over for Perth’s premier hoop William Pike who got the job done on the six-year-old in the Railway Stakes from barrier 12.
Pike meanwhile has opted to ride Elite Belle’s stable mate Disposition, the Reset three-year-old looking to become the third of his age to win the race in the past four years.
Disposition won his opening four starts including back-to-back Listed races at the track this season before his first loss when runner-up to Rommel in the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) on Railway Stakes Day.
Pike rode him that day from barrier two but the duo has an even tougher test her in open company from a horror barrier 17 draw.
WA Guineas winner Rommel meanwhile has also suffered an early blow with trainer Neville Parnham’s son Steven to ride the promising galloper from the outside alley (16) which has produced just one winner since 1983.
Also drawn wide are the likes of last year’s WA Guineas – Kingston Town Classic double winner Ihtsahymn (18), Railway Stakes runner-up Balmont Girl (16) and Williams’ third hope Respondent (12).
