After winning the Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic (1000m) at Ballarat two weeks ago, Carriages has fast become the favourite to take out the feature event at the Gold Coast on January 10.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained filly is set to head north for the Calaway Gal Stakes (1050m) at Doomben Racecourse on December 13, however seeing as the filly has already qualified for the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m), this will likely be her last preparation run.
Carriages debuted on November 8 with a minor placing in the TAB Betting Season 2YO Plate (1000m) at her home ground of Randwick. She kept kicking up to lead but was being taken on. Still being challenged at the 300m mark, she weakened.
The filly then won her maiden next time out in the Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic, getting a feel for the right-hand run of Queensland tracks. She was very fast out the gate to cross over from seven wide and lead. She was running along and got most of them off the bit before kicking on and fighting off all challenges.
Carriages has returned to her Randwick base following her all-the-way win and is in good condition according to Mark Newnham, racing manager for Waterhouse.
“She’s just had a pretty easy time of it since she’s been back,” Newnham told TVN.
“Her weight is back to her normal racing weight. She’s good.”
Newnham noted that Carriages concrete direction towards the 2015 Magic Millions would not be decided until after the 2014 Calaway Gal Stakes but another run before January 10 is unlikely.
“She’s already qualified and she isn’t a filly that needs a lot of racing,” he said.
“If needed she could always have a trial or jumpout.”
Betting markets for the 2015 Magic Millions are due to open at Ladbrokes.com.au shortly, make sure your account is up and ready to go.
