2015 Golden Slipper Hopeful Aegean Sea Prepares at Rosehill

Aegean Sea’s maiden win on her debut in the Surf Meets The Turf Plate (1000m) on November 22 may have been overshadowed by the mass exodus just before the race but the filly will have the chance to show what she’s capable of under less scandalous conditions this Saturday in the Rosehill 2YO Plate (1100m).

Aspen Star, Not A Cherry, and pre-race $3.30 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au Italy were all late scratchings from the Surf Meets The Turf Plate after a disturbance in the stalls.

Aegean Sea then flew from the gates and ran straight to the front. She controlled the race at a nice tempo and put a two length gap between her rivals at the turn. She held the margin until late, winning by half a length. She led the race the whole way and trainer Clarry Conners is confident she would have won even if the three horses hadn’t been scratched.

The trainer believes the two-year-old filly is his best chance at winning the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) and she will reinforce her chances in Saturday’s 2YO Plate.

The race has relocated to Rosehill from the problematic Kensington track which housed the Surf Meets The Turf Plate. While Conners wishes the race could have transferred to Warwick Farm instead, he’s confident Aegean Sea can beat home her eight rivals.

“I wish they had transferred the meeting to Warwick Farm,” Conners told Sky Racing.

“A thousand metres around her home track and they would have been flat-out catching her.

“Having it at Rosehill means it’s 1100 metres but that’s OK.

“She has done super since she won but win, lose or draw she will go to the paddock for a break.

“It won’t be for long, only three or four weeks. That’s enough for her because she does too well and I don’t want her getting too fat.

“Of the two-year-olds in the stable, she is the one who has shown the most early and is a lovely and sound filly.”

Betting markets for the 2YO Plate will open after the final field and barrier draw is released on Wednesday so make sure your Ladbrokes.com.au online betting account is ready to go.

New customers will receive up to $100 in a bonus match on their first bet, which means your account will be full to the brim.
