Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Twelve classy sprinters will contest the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday after Anthony Cummings’ Holder Sunset was scratched from the race.
The 2014 Starlight Stakes is one of three black-type races running in Sydney this weekend, offering a total of $100,000 in prize money.
Just four of the twelve horses are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, led by short favourite Our Boy Malachi at $2.60.
The Hawkes Racing-trained gelding has seen his price lengthen slightly over the past 24 hours but he still remains the clear favourite.
The other single figure hopefuls include Dothraki ($5.50), Lilliburlero ($8), and Shamalia ($8.50).
Will Our Boy Malachi justify his favouritism and win the 2014 Starlight Stakes from the widest barrier? Check out our betting tips for the race below to get a better understanding of our top three picks.
Gerald Ryan’s four-year-old gelding is offering punters a great price to win the Starlight Stakes considering he won a benchmark 95 over the same distance at Rosehill last time out on November 15. He enjoyed group level success during the Brisbane Winter Carnival, winning the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) and finishing third in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m). Having finished in the first three in 11 of his 16 career starts, Dothraki is well-tipped to find success on Saturday. He will enjoy carrying 58kg in the race, which is two kilos less than his two other starts this campaign.
#6 Our Boy Malachi ($2.60)
Team Hawkes’ six-year-old gelding is the undisputed favourite in the Starlight Stakes betting despite having to overcome a start from the widest gate. It’s not hard to see why, considering his form. Our Boy Malachi has won an astounding 14 of his 16 career starts, eight of which were over the 1100m distance. He also won the XXXX Gold Handicap (1200m) in 2012 from the widest gate, though he has generally been blessed with inside gates, which is his only downfall heading into the Starlight Stakes. Confidently won a 1100m handicap at Rosehill last time out and punters are confident he can do it again.
#11 Senta De Noche ($15)
Kris Lees’ seven-year-old gelding is offering punters great fixed-price odds to win the Starlight Stakes. He has won six of his 11 career starts but has never finished second or third. Plenty of experience over the distance (9:4-0-0) and will carry the minimum weight of 54kg as he jumps from barrier eight.
