Thermal Current Will Likely Progress to 2015 Standish Handicap

Thermal Current won the Group 3 Telstra Phonewords Stakes (1200m) this time last year as well as running at the highest level of racing in both the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), in which he finished just outside the placings.

Thermal Current will drop in class on Saturday in a bid to return to the winner's circle.

The gelding’s campaign this season looks a lot different however. He was a fast finishing fifth in the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m) on October 18, fading in just the last bit of the race, before finishing outside the placings in the Listed Security Sprint (1200m) on Melbourne Cup Day.

Peter Moody is hopeful that a drop in class will help Thermal Current return to the winner’s circle, which is why he’s running in the $80,000 McMahons Dairy Handicap (1200m) at Moonee Valley this Saturday – the same track and distance he won the Telstra Phoneword Stakes on last October.

“I thought this was a nice race for him, I just decided to bring him back in class to a ratings race and try and give him a kill,” Moody told Racing Victoria.

“He’s a nice horse. He ran very well first up and he was probably a bit flat second up at Flemington so we can hopefully get him back to winning ways.”

Thermal Current is the $4.60 favourite to win the Valley handicap at, jumping from barrier 10 with Regan Bayliss as rider. He will carry just 56.5kg in the race after Bayliss claimed 3kg as an apprentice jockey, which is on par with the weight he carried to success last spring.

“The barrier might make things a bit tricky but he’s generally a horse that holds a spot just behind the speed somewhere,” the trainer said.

Following the race, Thermal Current will likely progress towards the $120,000 Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Boxing Day or the $200,000 Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on New Year’s Day as his next start, returning to black-type races.

The McMahons Dairy Handicap is one of nine races running at Moonee Valley this Saturday. Open your online betting account at today to back Thermal Current and you’ll receive up to $100 in a bonus bet match.
