Sensational Report Stepping Up in Grade for 2014 Corey McDonald Handicap

Nine-year-old mare Sensational Report has had an illustrious career with over 60 career starts to her name. Even so, trainer Dianne Wynne is confident the mare can deliver her career best performance on Saturday in the Corey McDonald Handicap (1200m), which is saying something.

Sensational Report is one of just nine mares contesting the sprint race at Moonee Valley this Saturday, for which she is a $26 shot in the betting market.

The mare finished runner-up in a benchmark 78 over the same course and distance last time out and although she is stepping up in grade, Wynne believes she’ll be a competitor in the race. The mare has now gone almost one year without a victory, but the trainer claims she is in the best condition of her career and has a strong chance of claiming victory in the 2014 Corey McDonald Handicap.

“This one is open (grade) but she drops in weight and she likes Moonee Valley and she races well in that sort of company,” Wynne told Racing Victoria.

“With what rating she is (74) it is very hard to place her because around the country (tracks) you’re pretty limited.

“I was going to run her at Ballarat the other day, but I saw the one at Moonee Valley and she loves Moonee Valley so I decided to go there.”

She will have the advantage of carrying the minimum weight of 54kg in the race, which is four and a half kilos less than the 58.5kg she carried last time out.

Wynne happens to be Sensational Report’s owner as well as trainer and is keen to keep running her next season as a ten-year-old.

“I own her now and I don’t want to breed her, if she is happy to keep racing I’ll just find some races for her and keep her going around for as long as she will,” she concluded.

The Chris Waller-trained Calming Influence is the short-prices favourite to win the Corey McDonald Handicap, paying $2.80 at The mare will get the inside run from barrier one with James Winks in the saddle but will have to run with the top weight of 60kg, up to six kilos heavier than her rivals.
