Stawell trainer Paul Jones has nominated the Mornington Cup 2015 next April as the long term autumn aim for his Ballarat Cup winner Mujadale.
Seven-year-old Mujahid gelding Mujadale has been in top form over the past month winning a provincial cups double thanks to victories in the Ararat Gold Cup (2000m) and then the Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) last Saturday.
He has now been accepted for the $40,000 Sportingbet Handicap (2500m) in Adelaide this Saturday allocated the 61.5kg top weight with regular rider Kevin Forrester on standby for the ride.
Jones however is likely to scratch the galloper from the Morphettville race, leaving a field of eight, and instead focus on the $120,000 Listed Werribee Open Handicap (2600m) run on Sunday December 14 with the in-form veteran.
“He ran (ninth) in the race last year when it was the Werribee Cup, they’ve changed the name of it for some unknown reason,” Jones told Racing Victoria.
“He’s jumping out of his skin and he’s pulled up probably as well as he’s ever pulled up.”
After that he will give the galloper a freshen-up before targeting the $150,000 Listed Bagot Handicap (2800m) at Flemington Racecourse on New Year’s Day.
Also on the agenda for Mujadale early next year is a shot at the $300,000 Mornington Cup (2400m) run on Saturday March 28 during next year’s Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.
“The Bagot’s one we’ve sort of pencilled in and we’re possibly thinking long-term about the Mornington Cup (2400m),” Jones said.
“We’ll just see how he goes after Werribee whether we go to the Bagot or we go to Mornington or maybe even both.
“We’ll just have to take each run as they come and see how the horse goes.”
