2014 Moonee Vase Runner-Up Atmosphere Sold to Hong Kong

Just one day after it was revealed that promising three-year-old colt Looks Like The Cat had been sold to Hong Kong connections, putting an end to his Australian racing career, news has come out that fellow three-year-old Atmosphere has also been sold to Hong Kong.

The Trent Busuttin-trained gelding debuted at the end of August with a midfield finish at Sale before just missing out on a maiden victory the following month by a neck. He had a further three starts during the spring but failed to score his first win.

He came close in the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m), finishing just a shoulder behind Magicool in second place. The gelding had to overcome a wide start from barrier 13 but managed to get on the heels of the leaders at the 400m mark and loomed as a big threat. He really attacked the line and did well to nab second place.

Atmosphere then ran second once again in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) on October 25. He was forced to chase the winner Moonovermanhattan from a long way out but ran home stoutly which would suggest he’d do well over a longer trip. He got the chance one week later in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) but battled too late to have any chance of winning. He finished in the bottom half of the field, eight and a half lengths off the winner Preferment.

Busuttin confirmed the staying prospect’s departure to TVN on Tuesday, stating that the offer from Hong Kong proved too irresistible to Atmosphere’s owners.

“Obviously, it is disappointing to lose a horse of his quality,” Busuttin said.

“You need a horse like this for a stable coming through. He would have been aimed up at those (Sydney) autumn staying races.

“But, the money was too good for the owner to turn down.”

The gelding has passed all the necessary veterinary checks and the finances have been completed, making the sale a done deal.

With two talented three-year-olds removed from the scene this autumn, there’s plenty of room for up and coming horses to shine.
