Red Excitement Set to Return in 2014 Razor Sharp

Five-year-old Red Excitement had an excellent summer campaign in Sydney early this year that saw the gelding win three consecutive starts and finish in the placings a further two times.

After ten months in rehab due to a tendon injury, Red Excitement will return to the track on December 13 in the Razor Sharp.

However his racing career had to be put on hold when he suffered a bowed tendon injury, which meant he missed both the autumn and spring carnivals.

He looks likely to resume his career on December 13 in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on Villiers Stakes Day; however trainer Gerald Ryan is confident the gelding will be ready to make the step up to Stakes races in no time.

“I was thinking of resuming first-up in the Villiers Stakes, that is how well I think the horse is going,” Ryan told TVN.

“But we will look at the Razor Sharp and then probably go to Melbourne for the Standish up the straight and then look for a 1400m race.

“We will keep him to big tracks and good tracks, just to look after him.”

The Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) will run at Flemington on New Year’s Day.

It will be ten months since Red Excitement was seen on the racecourse. Rather than giving the gelding time and rest to heal his tendon injury, connections sent him on an extensive rehabilitation program which Ryan believes will be a benefit in the long run.

“He was never turned out, we kept him working the whole time,” Ryan said.

“A lot of the credit must go to Tim Boland and the team at Limitless Lodge at Wyong, they had him on the water walker, kept him walking, kept him active.

“He came in to the stable and had a canter and then went out again back to the water walker.

“It has been a long process but he seems to be really thriving.”

Red Excitement had his first piece of work in several months on November 13, coming second in a barrier trial at Rosehill. He showed good natural speed and pulled his way to the front before opening up a good break. He was under no pressure in the straight and could have gone a lot quicker. It was a lovely piece of work that signals good things for his return in the 2014 Razor Sharp. offers the best odds on all the top races across the country.
