2015 Oakleigh Plate Option for Atmospherical

David Pfieffer this morning confirmed plans to bring his Melbourne Cup Carnival winning mare Atmospherical back for a shot at Group 1 glory in the Oakleigh Plate 2015 next autumn.

The boom daughter of Northern Meteor posted her sixth career win at start number 10, and made it back-to-back spring victories, in the Listed Dilmah Earl Grey Stakes (1000m) down the Flemington straight on November 6.

In that Crown Oaks Day assignment the four-year-old, ridden by expat Kiwi James McDonald, beat home Consorting by one and a half lengths impressing her Warwick Farm-based trainer.

A progressive type, Atmospherical is now a dual stakes winner having also taken out the Listed Darley Denise’s Joy Stakes (1100m) at Scone back in May.

Pfieffer has sent the mare out for a well-deserved spell and is already plotting her Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival return.

“She showed us that she is going to keep improving and hopefully she can keep improving to that level that I would like to get her too,” Pfieffer told Shane Anderson on Racing Ahead on Tuesday morning.

“She will only get about a month off, but she is a four-year-old mare and she hasn’t had a hard career and she didn’t have a hard prep last time, so it will be a short little break for her which will mentally freshen her up.”

At this stage he’s hoping to bring her back for a first-up run straight into Group 2 company in the $200,000 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield Racecourse on CF Orr Stakes Day, February 14.

How she performs in the Rubiton will then determine whether she’s going well enough to be tested at elite level, Pfieffer eyeing a run in the $400,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) back at the track a fortnight later for Blue Diamond Stakes Day.

“She is now in the paddock having a well-earned break,” he said.

“The plan is to look at Melbourne early next year and we are hoping for a first-up return in the Rubiton Stakes at Caulfield.

“With the level that she is at in her career it is probably one step at a time and if she performs well in the Rubiton then we will push forward to the Oakleigh Plate.”

All going well the autumn sprints could be the mare’s oyster with Pfieffer adding that races including the $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington in early March, Sydney’s $400,000 Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill and even the lucrative $2.5 million Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick in April would be considered.

“If the Oakleigh Plate ends up being a bit rich for her than we will change our plans, but if she can shape up a be competitive in a race like that we can look at races like the Newmarket (Handicap), The Galaxy or the TJ (Smith Stakes),” he said

“They are all very good races and they are a very good bunch of sprinters in Australia, but I would like to be there and in the mix.

“Hopefully she can be competitive and we don’t want to be going there just to make up numbers.”
