2014 Summer Racing Carnival Over for Moment Of Change

Triple Group One winner Moment Of Change had a disappointing spring campaign that saw the gelding miss out on a placing in three consecutive runs. Trainer Peter Moody thought a change in scenery would help the horse improve, so he travelled to Perth for the summer racing carnival.

However, his plans have come to an abrupt end after Moment Of Change ran sixth in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) on Saturday. Considering he was runner-up in last year’s race, this was a disappointing result for the horse’s connections.

Instead of continuing with his planned WA campaign, the six-year-old will return to Melbourne to spell.

Moment Of Change was due to run in the $200,000 Group 3 Scahill Stakes (1400m) on December 6 but after finishing three and a half lengths off winning Magnifisio in the 2014 Winterbottom Stakes, he will go for a break instead.

“The horse has obviously just come to the end of his prep — he raced very, very flat on Saturday,” managing owner Rob Slade told Racing Network on Monday.

“With the run he had in the race he probably should have won easily, but Luke (Nolen, jockey) got off and said there was nothing left when he asked him to go.

“We were all very surprised because he’d seemed so good in himself all week over there.”

The gelding had a great campaign at the beginning of the year, which included a runner-up finish in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) before winning both the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m).

When he returned in the spring however, the gelding could only manage a runner-up finish in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) before running last in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) after dropping out near the 500 metre mark. He ran better in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on his following two starts but a win/place continued to elude him.

Slade mentioned that Moment Of Change would likely return in February following his spell to defend his title in both the 2015 C.F. Orr Stakes and Futurity Stakes.
