John O’Shea’s last start Rosehill winner Malice is set to return to the track this Saturday shooting for a black type win in the ATC Cup 2014 after being nominated for the early summer showdown in Sydney.
Nominations for this year’s $100,000 Listed ATC Cup (2000m), one of three stakes races on the Rosehill Gardens race card for the weekend, have been extended until 11am (AEDT) on Tuesday after only nine gallopers were entered.
Of those early entries two represent Godolphin and O’Shea including Teofilo four-year-old Malice.
The gelding enjoyed a narrow win last start in the $85,000 Cellarbrations@Valentine Handicap (1900m) on November 15 and gets the chance to go back-to-back this weekend.
O’Shea has also nominated for Street Cry gelding Gallatin, the four-year-old first-up here not having raced since September 27.
That day he ran a brave fourth finishing under a length behind Deane Martin in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality Handicap (2400m), a run he should improve on after a break returning over less distance.
In his latest start Malice beat home a similar field to that nominated for the ATC Cup including the Sam Kavanagh-trained Midsummer Sun who was only a nose off the winner.
Group 3 runner-up behind Entirely Platinum in the Sky High Stakes over 1900m at Rosehill back in March, Monsun seven-year-old Midsummer Sun is sure to appreciate the 2000m and is likely to be right up in the finish again if accepted.
Third placegetter in the Cellarbrations Handicap meanwhile was Chris Waller’s veteran Permit, the Dansili eight-year-old only a quarter length off Malice in the lead-up the bookies are likely to rate the form of.
Waller’s other ATC Cup nominee is then the imported Beyond Thankful, the Whipper five-year-old coming via a fourth in the same lead-up race.
Along with Malice the only other horse coming off a win is the Peter Moody-trained Metaphorical.
The four-year-old Dylan Thomas mare has won three of her 12 starts to date, including one of two over Saturday’s ATC Cup distance, and comes off a November 14 win by nearly three lengths when defeating a field of fellow fillies and mares in a Benchmark 78 over 2040m at Moonee Valley.
Last year’s ATC Cup winner was the Gai Waterhouse-trained Travolta who won the race by two and a half lengths second-up after an eighth when resuming at the same track a fortnight earlier.
Permit and Kerry Parker’s 44-start veteran Planet Purple are the two second-up runners on Saturday in the original nominations.
The likely next-up summer race for the ATC Cup graduates is $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Royal Randwick on Boxing Day, December 26.
