Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Two-year-old filly Aegean Sea won the controversial Surf Meets The Turf Plate (1000m) at Kensington on Saturday on her debut and is likely to run again in a fortnight.
Clarry Conners has revealed Aegean Sea is his 2015 Golden Slippers hope at the moment, so the trainer will run the filly early next month in a bid to get some early runs on the race’s board. If she can reproduce her success on the weekend, the filly’s earnings will be boosted to just under $100,000.
“She’s a lovely filly, a bit of a sweetie. I think she goes pretty good, she is a natural runner,” Conners told TVN.
“She blew the place down [on Saturday].
“There’s a similar race in a fortnight, again over 1000 metres. If she wins again it will give her enough prizemoney for me to give her a break.
“She might have enough money to get her into the Slipper without me having to push her then.”
There was a delay in loading the barriers on Saturday during the Surf Meets The Turf Plate which had a dramatic effect on the race. There were three late scratchings and missed injuries when the majority of the field was loaded while Brother Wind was still a long way from the gate.
Not A Cherry and Aspen Star both became agitated with the delay and flipped over while the race favourite Italy hurt her leg.
Aspen Star landed on his back and smashed the tree in the jockey’s saddle, which co-trainer James Cummings was shocked by. He claims the colt has behaved perfectly in his two barrier trials prior to the race, claiming they had to wait too long in the stalls.
The colt escaped any physical injuries but must return to barrier trials to ensure he hasn’t suffered any psychological issues. Not A Cherry will also trial again while Italy will be vetted.
The race’s pre-drama didn’t dampen the race however, with Aegean Sea leading the entire way to give Conners his first juvenile win of the season.
The four-time Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) winning training now has his best chance at securing his fifth win on April 4.
