Pike Likes Shining Knight for 2014 Winterbottom Stakes Win

Six-time Perth Jockey’s Premiership winning hoop William Pike has a number of top rides at home for ‘Super Saturday’s this weekend including aboard the Grant Williams-trained Shining Knight in the Winterbottom Stakes 2014.

One of two elite levels on the Railway Stakes Day program at Ascot Racecourse, this year’s $750,000 Crown Perth Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) features 13 top sprinters.

Pike’s ride in the classic is Blackfriars six-year-old Shining Knight, the gelding coming off a first-up win at the track on November 4 in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m).

Ridden by Pike from barrier five for the last start victory, Shining Knight has the form but will need it with a wide gate to overcome in Saturday’s Group 1.

He’s drawn out near the car park in barrier 12 and is paying $11 in the latest Winterbottom Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au to win.

The Winterbottom Stakes betting markets are led by the Robbie Griffiths-trained Angelic Light, targeted for this race after a second to Lankan Rupee in the Manikato Stakes, paying $3.

The other single figure hopes are then last year’s runner-up Moment Of Change ($4.20) for Peter Moody, Godolphin’s runner Sidestep ($7) with a gun gate two draw and the best of the local hopes – Magnifisio ($8.50) coming off a Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) win from November 8.

Despite the wide barrier Pike likes the upside of Shining Knight and believes he has what it takes to improve on his fifth behind Buffering in the race last Perth Summer Racing Carnival.

“I think he is improving. As long as we can get a nice run from that barrier, we are a chance,” he told The Australian.

Pike also rides $7.50 chance Elite Belle in the day’s marquee race, the fellow Williams-trained Canny Lad mare also drawn wide for her bid in the $1 million Group 1 Carlton Draught Railway Stakes (1600m).

She’s one of three in the race for Williams whose best fancy is Respondent ($6) who Pike has ridden for three runs this campaign including last weekend’s second to Bass Strait, a $14 chance for the weekend, in the Group 3 R.J. Peters Stakes (1500m).

Pike has also been aboard Elite Belle for her two runs this season when beating home Barakey first-up in the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) and then finishing fourth to Winterbottom Stakes hope Magnifisio in the Lee Steere – the hoop saying he wouldn’t swap his ride on her for Respondent.

The day’s other major support race is the $400,000 Group 2 Sky Racing W.A. Guineas (1600m) and again Pike is in for a big ride there partnering with Williams’ undefeated favourite Disposition ($2.30).
