Five Late Entries for 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes

There are now a staggering 532 horses in the running for the 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes on February 28 at Caulfield Racecourse after five late entries were taken on Wednesday.

Unbeaten colt Prompt Return was one of the five late entries after winning both of his two spring starts. The Danny O’Brien-trained colt won his maiden in the Elmore RC 2YO Maiden Plate (900m) before making a brilliant black-type racing debut in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) on November 8. After jumping awkwardly, the colt managed to get on the inside division. He kicked away strongly at the furlong and held a two length margin all the way to the line.

Prompt Return is due to line up at Ballarat this Saturday in the Magic Millions Clockwise Classic (1000m) in which the youngster will jump from barrier seven of nine.

The John O’Shea-trained Godolphin filly Antelucan was another late entry after winning her maiden in the Group 3 Emirates Airline Plate (1000m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day, along with Miss Gidget, the Colin & Cindy Alderson-trained filly who finished runner-up in the Listed Santa’s Magical Kingdom Stakes (1000m) at Sandown on Saturday.

Mick Price leads the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) early nominations with 45 entries to his name followed by Godolphin with 35 and David Hayes & Tom Dabernig with 34.

Fastnet Rock is the best-represented stallion in the $1 million race for the fourth successive year with 27 of his progeny on the list of entries. Exceed and Excel and Not a Single Doubt are next, with each being represented by 26 of their offspring.

The Blue Diamond Stakes is the second richest two-year-old race in Australia so it’s not hard to see why it has attracted so much interest.

The race was last won by the John O’Shea-trained filly Earthquake who went on to finish in the first three in five of her six following races, including the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m), Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), and Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m).
