Burles Happy with The Cleaner’s 2014 Railway Stakes Barrier

Barriers for the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) were drawn Tuesday morning, with race favourite The Cleaner drawing well in barrier eight.

However, he is expected to come into barrier six if the four emergencies don’t make the race, which has brought home three winners in the past 30 years.

The Cleaner opened the Railway Stakes betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au as $4 favourite. Although his price has since drifted out to $4.60, he remains the clear favourite with Respondent on the second line of betting at $7 followed by Elite Belle at $8.

The gelding’s trainer Mick Burles couldn’t be happier with the barrier draw, calling it a perfect start for his dominant stable-star who likes to find the front and set the pace of all his runs.

“He’s real good, I couldn’t be happier,” Burles told Perth Racing.

“He will come out of gate six, and that is just lovely, I couldn’t ask for better.”

The Cleaner has become something of a cult hero on the racing scene due to his consistent bold front-running style. The seven-year-old had fantastic autumn and spring campaigns, finishing in the first three in all but one of his nine races. He won both the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) before making his first step up to Group One racing in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

He had to overcome a wide start from barrier 14 in the 2014 Cox Plate but worked hard to find the front after 600 metres. He was still boxing on into the straight but was just outclassed by his rivals. Despite finishing in ninth place, The Cleaner was just three and a half lengths of the winner Adelaide.

The gelding did his usual thing in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) last time out, relishing the return to the mile. After setting a sold tempo he wound it up from the 1000 metre mark, fighting on for third place.

“The Emirates hasn’t taken anything out of him, it won’t worry him and he will give 150 per cent,” Burles said.
