Sysmo Should Be in Top Form for 2014 Ballarat Cup

Tony McEvoy has a busy week ahead of him with runners across eight different meetings.

The trainer will have horses running at Canterbury on Wednesday, Hawkesbury and Orange on Friday, Randwick, Ballarat, and Morphettville on Saturday, and Strathalbyn on Sunday. The spring racing carnival may have come to an end last Saturday but there’s still plenty of racing action for punters to sink their teeth into.

“You could say there are not enough hours in the day to manage everything,” McEvoy told Racing Network on Tuesday.

“Talk about a busy time.”

McEvoy may not have enough hours in the day this week to organise his entire team but he will definitely make time for Sysmo, running in the $200,000 Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) on Saturday, who is perhaps his key runner of the week.

Five-year-old gelding Sysmo had over nine months off after just missing out on a placing in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) last December. He returned during the spring for the Myer Spring Fashion Handicap (1400m) on October 11, which he again finished fourth in after trailing up on the fence without much galloping room.

He finished fifth in the Listed Sale Cup (1600m) before a runner-up finish in the Listed Premium Stakes (1800m) on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington, losing by just a nose to Atacama. Sysmo has one more chance to end his year with a win on Saturday, which McEvoy is confident is a strong possibility.

“I think it’s a really good race for him and he should go to it at his top,” the trainer said.

“I took him home to the Barossa after his run in the Plate on Melbourne Cup day and he has trained on really well.

“I watched him work earlier this week and he has trained on beautifully.”

Sysmo will carry 57.5kg in the 2014 Ballarat Cup, which is 3.5 kilograms more than the minimum race weight of 54kg.

Betting markets for the Ballarat Cup will open shortly after the final field is announced on Wednesday, make sure your online betting account is open and ready to bet with before then.

New customers get up to $100 in bonus bets, which mean you’ve got an even bigger chance at winning this weekend.
