Angelic Light continues to hold top spot in the 2014 Winterbottom Stakes odds following the release of the final field on Monday afternoon for Saturday’s sprint major at Ascot Racecourse.

The Robbie Griffiths-trained Holy Roman Emperor mare was one of 13 sprinters accepted to face off in this year’s $750,000 Group 1 Crown Perth Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), the barrier draw for which is due out this evening.

Due to be ridden by Damien Oliver, Griffiths’ five-year-old pays $3 in the latest Winterbottom Stakes odds at following her close call at Moonee Valley last time out.

Runner-up to the world’s highest rated sprinter Lankan Rupee, who she defeated earlier in the season in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m), on October 24 Angelic Light was just a nose off him in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m).

She was saved then for this Perth major, her Cranbourne-based trainer opting not to run her in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington on November 8 won by Terravista.

Following Angelic Light in the current Winterbottom Stakes betting markets are then three other single figure hopes with:

  • #1 Moment Of Change ($4.60) – Peter Moody’s autumn champ at Caulfield in the Group 1 1400m races was runner-up to Buffering in last year’s Winterbottom and out to improve on some disappointing recent form and go one better in 2014. The Barley A Moment six-year-old hasn’t finished in the money since August and comes off a fifth to Terravista in the Darley Classic before which he ran eighth in the Manikato.
  • #2 Sidestep ($7) – John O’Shea-trained, Godolphin-owned four-year-old has the headgear back on here as he looks to win his first Group 1 and improve on a first-up eighth in the Darley Classic. Won the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) in Sydney during the autumn and is class on his day with the right run.
  • #12 Magnifisio ($7) – Best fancied of the local gallopers, Jim Taylor’s Magnus mare is out to hold off the interstate charge and has the right lead-up to do so. Winner of the Roma Cup back in May, she was a first-up fourth to Railway Stakes hope Elite Belle in the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) on October 25 before her good win in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) on November 8.

Outside of those under $10 are then a host of other gallopers with genuine claims for an upset Winerbottom Stakes result including former Group 1 The Galaxy winner Bel Sprinter ($11), Grant Williams’ last start Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes winner Shining Knight ($11) and the Phillip Stokes-trained Adelaide visitor Éclair Big Bang ($13) coming off a 1400m win at Flemington from Emirates Stakes Day.
