Lark Hill horseman Darren Mcauliffe is confident his well fancied filly Furious Dame is ready to step up to a mile and compete against the boys in Saturday’s 2014 WA Guineas at Ascot Racecourse.
The daughter of Universal Ruler is one of 15 three-year-olds making up the field for the $400,000 Group 2 Sky Racing W.A. Guineas (1600m), running as one of the ‘Big 3’ races on Railway Stakes Day this weekend in Perth.
Drawn nicely in barrier four with Ben Kennedy taking over for William Pike, Furious Dame pays $10 in the latest WA Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
The markets are led by Pike’s mount, Disposition ($2.40), who the jockey rates as the one to beat following four straight wins from as many career starts for the Grant Williams-trained gelding.
But Mcauliffe is also confident he’s got a top chance in the set weights showdown having prepared Furious Dame with this run in mind all season.
“She’s been trained to run the mile,” he said after Saturday’s victory.
“She’s very fit and she’ll give some cheek.”
A winner of two of her five starts so far, she put a big four and a half lengths on her closest rival two back in a three-year-olds’ maiden over 1300m at Northam last month before another win this time at Ascot just last Saturday.
There she beat home Oradol by one and a quarter lengths over 1200m, Saturday then a notable step up in class and distance with Furious Dame making not only her mile debut but also her black type debut as well.
It’s an acid test Mcauliffe fancies her to handle though especially after her nice barrier allocation on Monday.
