Renew Takes Out Sandown Cup

Clear favourite Renew has delivered young trainer Archie Alexander an impressive staying victory this afternoon, displaying a keen turn of foot in the final straight to take out the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m).

Jumping from the gates well, Renew settled well within the pack of eleven at Sandown; allowing early leaders Distillation, Ancient King and Aggregator to set only a fair tempo from the gates and passing the post the first time.

Settling into a lovely rhythm rounding onto the back straight, Renew continued to hold ideal position before steadily pushing forward approaching the final bend.

Finding a clear racing line upon reaching the final straight, Renew quickly charged up and joined Like A Carousel at the fore of the field; locking in an impressive pace battle over the last 300m and poking a head clear to register a maiden Australian win.

Jockey Chris Symons delivered an exceptional ride on Renew in the 2014 Sandown Cup and was thrilled to deliver Alexander a notable race win.

“A great achievement by everyone involved. The first time I met Archie was today, so I’m just rapt for everyone involved,” Symons said after crossing the line.

“He ran terrific last start at Flemington and then today with the favourite (Massiyn) out it was always going to be a messy race.

“He hit that turn really quick, and the awkward draw made it really difficult to get in and we had a bit of cover, I’ve barbecued it early but I recovered late.

“He (Like A Carousel) generated more pace into the race which definitely helped my bloke, when I got a bit of cover he switched off.

“Bossy (Zanbagh) came around me and I knew he was the one to beat, I got onto his back and then ran in a circle into the straight, I had a lot of horse under me and he did the rest, which is great.”

Archie Alexander was understandably thrilled to have secured OTI Racing a win in the 2014 Sandown Cup and was thankful for the powerful syndicate showing great faith in his abilities.

“It’s amazing, a complete dream. Thanks very much to the owners and the team at home, everyone works hard and great already to be winning a Sandown Cup,” Alexander said.

“Very special and on a bit of a cloud.

“It’s all down to this horse and these guys (OTI Racing) for giving me support – first season trainer and to give me a horse like this, very grateful.

“I’m not quite sure the future for me and him, but he’s been amazing to me.”
