Fast ‘N’ Rocking Pokes Clear to Win 2014 Kevin Heffernan Stakes

Talented sprinter Fast ‘N’ Rocking has responded well to a disappointing run for third at Flemington last weekend; charging home to take out the Listed Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) at Sandown Racecourse.

Leaving from the gates particularly well, jockey Dwayne Dunn settled the Fastnet Rock gelding in prime position on the heels of Nearest To Pin, Flamberge and Big Buddie who flew the barriers and charged to the fore of the pack.

Finding the final straight having received an ideal run in transit, Fast ‘N’ Rocking steadily moved forward alongside clear favourite Generalife; upping the tempo with 250m to run and shooting to the front of the pack to find the line a head in the clear of the Godolphin runner; Flamberge running on for third.

Dunn secured the Spring Carnival’s Jockey Premiership in partnering Fast ‘N’ Rocking to success in the 2014 Kevin Heffernan Stakes and was thrilled with the feel delivered by the classy four-year-old.

“It always means something to me and great to be doing something for a good cause,” Dunn said after crossing the line.

“I had a beautiful run in transit. I was just a little bit wary of getting there too soon, the second horse had me done and dusted but he kicked beautifully.

“A big thank you to David Hayes, because I had to talk him into running this horse here so he’ll probably want a slice of the pie as well.”

Co-trainer Tom Dabernig was pleased with both Fast ‘N’ Rocking and Dwayne Dunn’s performances in the Kevin Heffernan Stakes, believing the horse’s pre-season gelding played a key role in the successful run.

“It was a great effort by Dwayne, I thought he rode the horse beautifully and he’s been riding well all spring, and a big thrill for Fast ‘N’ Rocking,” Dabernig said.

“Since being gelded he’s had a really good spring.

“He’s in excellent form and I think the 1300m is ideal for him but he’s also a very good sprinter, so now his rating is up we’ll be able to back off him and we’ll be able to have a lot of fun with him.

“When you back a horse up you’ve got to consider how they do during the week, and he did really well so it was a good decision.”

Fast ‘N’ Rocking secured a fourth race win in the 2014 Kevin Heffernan Stakes, in a career which has also included four minor places over a total of 22 competitive appearances at the races.
