The 2014 Sandown Cup is one of nine black-type races running at Sandown Racecourse on Saturday, which also happens to be the final day of the spring racing campaign. It may just be a listed race but with a lucrative $150,000 prize pool plus the rare chance to run two miles, it’s no surprise the race has attracted some of the top stayers.

Five of the 12 runners are offering single figure odds in the betting market, led by Massiyn at $3.20.

The Robert Hickmott-trained six-year-old opened as favourite in the fixed odds market on Thursday and has already seen his price shorten, making him the market mover of the field.

The entire will enjoy the inside run after drawing barrier one with Nicholas Hall to ride. His spring campaign has been hit-and-miss though he did score his first win last time out in the Listed Bendigo Cup (2400m). However he needs to beat home a classy field of rivals to score the trophy of the 2014 Sandown Cup, including four other single figure hopefuls.

  • #7 Renew ($4.20) – made his debut in Australia last month but finished end of the field in his first two starts, the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) and Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m). The gelding turned it around last time out in the Visit Victoria Plate (2800m), finishing just a nose off the winner in second place. The Irish import’s first Australian win still eludes him however.
  • #2 Like A Carousel ($5.50) – the Ken Keys’ trained gelding will have to overcome a wide start from barrier 12. He has good form after winning the Listed Harry White Classic (2400m) in September before finishing third in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m). Connections were aiming towards a start in the 2014 Melbourne Cup but couldn’t earn a place on the field after finishing sixth in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) with a plain finish. The gelding will get the chance to tackle the two mile this Saturday and his chances are good.
  • ##1 Shoreham ($7) – will carry the top weight in the Sandown Cup at 58kg, up to 1.5 kilos more than his rivals, however an inside run from barrier two may help compensate for this. The gelding’s spring campaign has been less than stellar, finishing midfield in all five of his starts including the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m).
  • #5 Zanbagh ($8.50) – this four-year-old mare is ready to take on the boys in the Sandown Cup and is the final single figure hopeful in the betting market. The Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) runner-up has failed to impress this season but did manage to earn a minor placing in the Benalla Cup (2046m).

However the 2014 Sandown Cup could easily be won by one of the seven runners offering double figure odds including Unchain My Heart ($17) who is experienced over the two mile distance after running in the 2014 Melbourne Cup last Tuesday.
