The Lonhro gelding comes off a string of nice runs this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and is now the best fancied of the dozen middle distance sprinters to take out Saturday’s $150,000 Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) on Zipping Classic Day.

Drawn in barrier eight with James McDonald to ride, the five-year-old pays $4 through Ladbrokes.com.au in a fairly open Kevin Heffernan Stakes betting market.

Winner of Rosehill’s Listed Civic Stakes – Winter Stakes double back in July, this time in he’s run top four in his three starts starting with a fourth behind Famous Seamus in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

From there he travelled to Melbourne for a third behind Lucky Hussler in the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) on October 18 and then a last start third when beaten under a length by subsequent Emirates Stakes winner Hucklebuck in the Group 3 Yellowglen Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.

There are then four other single figure hopes in the markets with:

  • #1 Fast ‘N’ Rocking ($5) – Barrier four draw for the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained four-year-old who won over 1200m at Moonee Valleyt wo back before a fourth behind Éclair Big Bang over 1400m at Flemington just last Saturday. Seeing the track and distance for the first time here but travelling well and this is his season swansong with Perth ruled out.
  • #4 Reparations ($5.50) – Anthony Freedman’s Exceed And Excel six-year-old was 15th in Brisbane’s richest race – the Stradbroke Handicap – in June but returned to winning form first-up at Flemington on Cup Day with a good effort in the Listed MSS Security Stakes (1200m) he’ll be looking to repeat when up to a distance he’s won two from three starts over.
  • #6 Charlie Boy ($5.50) – Rails-drawn four-year-old prepared by Gerald Ryan, has been tracking well this season including a Premiere Stakes second in Sydney, and a last start fourth behind Deep Field in the Group 2 TAB.Com.Au Stakes (1200m) on Derby Day. Goes up from 53.5kg to 59kg under the WFA conditions of Saturday however so needs to handle those extra kilos.
  • #3 Flamberge ($7.50) – One of two Peter Moody-trained chances in the race this five-year-old won the Group 3 The Heath over less distance at Caulfield back in August but hasn’t finished in the money again since, his last start seeing him carry a hefty 60.5kg to fourth in a Crown Oaks Day black-type over 1000m.

Outside of those under $10 are then a host of other livewire chances including Mick Price’s Fastnet Rock mare Jazz Song ($12) out wide in barrier 11 as she looks to atone for a dead last in the MSS Security Stakes from November 4 and Moody’s other runner Office Bearer ($13) drawn better in gate three coming off a second in that same Melbourne Cup Day race.
