Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Leon & Troy Corstens-trained General Groove is one of nine horses set to tackle the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m) on Saturday, on the final day of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.
Should the gelding win, he’ll make it three consecutive wins in a row, with Troy Corstens putting the gelding’s form improvement down to “natural progression”.
General Groove’s chances at winning the 2014 Sandown Stakes improved on Wednesday when he drew an inside start from barrier two. Dwayne Dunn will serve as hoop for the first time and the gelding will carry just 54kg in the race – five kilos less than Speediness and a significant drop from when he last ran at Sandown Racecourse (60kg in the XFLAM Handicap).
The gelding is a $13 shot in the Ladbrokes.com.au betting market to win the Sandown Stakes on Saturday, behind favourite Pornichet at $2.40. If he can do it, he’ll be looking at three consecutive wins to cap off his spring campaign.
General Groove won the Pura Milk Handicap (1300m) at Bendigo on October 18 before an impressive win in the Lavazza Short Black Handicap (1400m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.
“It’s never easy to win on Melbourne Cup day but he did a really good job against some nice horses,” Corstens told Racing Network on Thursday.
“This is a step-up in class again for him on Saturday.
“He’s a horse who was always going to take time, so finding some form now is not really surprising – a natural progression you could call it.”
Tommy Berry delivered a stunning ride on General Groove last Tuesday, coming from last to win along the rails.
“He’s done everything right since Cup day and he’s a tenacious little horse who tries very hard,” the trainer added.
“I expect him to run really well again.”
He’s definitely got the form to win on Saturday but in his first step up to Group level, General Groove may just find himself outclassed by his rivals.
