Gear Change Could Help Rose Of Choice Win 2014 Summoned Stakes

Rose Of Choice is one of 16 mares taking on the maximum capacity Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1500m) on Saturday, set to jump from barrier six with Mark Zahra serving as hoop.

Co-trainer Paul Snowden believes a gear change will help the five-year-old beat home her competition and win the $150,000 Summoned Stakes title and as such she will not be wearing blinkers in the Zipping Classic Day supporting race.

“I think a key gear change for her on Saturday is the blinkers off just to get her to relax a touch more up to 1500 metres and if she can do so off a pretty good draw then she’s going to be right in the mix,” Snowden told RSN’s Racing Ahead.

“She ran really well first up and she backed it up with a good second behind Mahara over Cup week and I think she’s looking for a bit further now and certainly 1500 suits her.”

Rose Of Choice was runner-up in the Group 3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington last time out, finishing just one length off winner Mahara. This added to her third placing in the Group 3 Nivison (1200m) on October 18, her only other spring campaign start. She was very wide early before getting in three wide and ranging up the point of the bend. She was still in with a chance with 20m to go and finished less than half a length off winner Avoid Lightning in a top run.

Snowden is pleased with how the mare came through the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes last Tuesday and is hopeful she will race near the speed on Saturday.

“It’s pretty important that she gets a bit of cover but you don’t have to drag her back too far from the soft draw,” the co-trainer said.

“Hopefully we can take advantage of it and settle somewhere in the first three pairs.”

Rose Of Choice is favourite to win the 2014 Summoned Stakes in the Ladbrokes.com.au betting market, offering $4.20 ahead of Politeness ($4.60).
