This Saturday a class line-up of end-of-season stayers will face off in the Zipping Classic 2014, betting tips and exotic selections for the weight-for-age Sandown feature detailed below.
There are nine gallopers engaged in this year’s $350,000 Group 2 Deadly Design Zipping Classic (2400m), set to run as Sandown Race 5 at 3:25pm (AEDT) on the weekend.
Favourite in the current Zipping Classic odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.50 to reenter the winner’s circle is the Darren Weir-trained Prince Of Penzance.
Drawn in gate four with Michelle Payne to ride, the recent Moonee Valley Gold Cup winner races on successive Saturdays having run second last weekend in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m).
Following in the markets also on single figures are then three other runners with the rails-drawn Spillway ($4), Lloyd Williams’ 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon ($4.80) and OTI Racing-owned French raider Au Revoir ($5.50).
So are the top fancies in betting the ones to lock into your Zipping Classic bets?
Or is there value to be found further down the markets in tipping an upset Zipping Classic 2014 result?
#1 Green Moon ($4.80)
Money is coming for the Robert Hickmott-trained veteran who opened at $6 before being snapped up at that price. Owner Lloyd Williams boasts six wins in this race, including with the event’s namesake Zipping who won four years straight from 2007 – 2010, so that’s a definite factor. May be an eight-year-old but still has form when beaten under three lengths to run ninth in the Caulfield Cup. A cracked hoof ruled him out of another Melbourne Cup run this month but has come on since his last start on October 18, has weight-for-age form and class could prevail.
#9 Epingle ($11)
Good price for Michael Kent’s Pins mare, the seven-year-old having run fourth in her three runs this season. A genuine stayer having handled the 3200m when fifth to The Offer in the Sydney Cup earlier in the year, her latest effort was behind Saturday’s favourite Prince Of Penzance in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup (2500m). MV is tight and she’ll be better suited to Sandown, WFA could be tough but loves this distance with two wins and a third form her three 2400m starts to date.
#4 Prince Of Penzance ($3.50)
Deserving favourite based on the recent form and Weir is confident he can back-up, but he’s done so only once before and could be coming to the end of his prep. Still has to be admired in gate four with Payne back in the saddle after the duo won the MV Cup on Cox Plate Day.
