Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday is Zipping Classic Day at Sandown Racecourse, with nine black-type races running across the day. One of those races is the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m), with 13 top three-year-old horses set to tackle the mile.
Four of the horses are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, led by the Darren Weir-trained Stratum Star at $2.80. Rekindled Power is hot on his tail at $3.80 followed by Lord Aspen ($4.80) and Ducal Castle ($8).
Will the favourite justify his firm price and win the 2014 Sandown Guineas, or will one of the other 12 runners beat the colt home? Check out the Races.com.au betting tips and selections for the race to give yourself the best chance at backing a winner this Saturday.
#5 Careless ($10)
The John O’Shea-trained three-year-old is both our pick to win the 2014 Sandown Guineas and the market mover of the betting. His price has already shortened from $15 to $10 so now is the time to back Careless while he remains on the cusp of single figure odds. Unlike many of his rivals, Careless has already had three starts over the mile, one of which he finished runner-up in. He is yet to win his first race but following three minor placings this season, including coming a close third in the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) now is his chance to shine. He was fifth last time out in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m), finishing just one length shy of the placings, despite having to overcome a wide start from barrier 13.
#2 Stratum Star ($2.80)
Darren Weir’s three-year-old colt is favourite for the Sandown Guineas and it’s not hard to see why. He turned his form around in spectacular fashion this season, finishing in the first two in all of his last five career starts and it won’t be a surprise if he can finish in the money on Saturday. Stratum Star enjoyed back-to-back wins in the Listed Yellowglen Vintage Stakes (1400m) and Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) during October before just missing out on victory in the Carbine Club last time out. He’ll enjoy a start from barrier two, his best of the season, with champion hoop Kerrin McEvoy.
#4 Lord Aspen ($4.80)
Lord Aspen is a wildcard in the Sandown Guineas with both advantages and disadvantages to his name. He’s yet to be tested at the class level of the race or run above 1400 metres. However his form is great and it’s highly possible he could finish in the money and add value to punters trifectas. The gelding has won all four of his career starts as well as his three barrier trails. The unbeaten runner won the Listed Hilton Hotels & Resorts Stakes (1400m) last time out ahead of Guineas rival Ducal Castle.
