Shoreham Leads 2014 Sandown Cup Final Field

The Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) is one of nine black-type races running at Sandown Racecourse this Saturday as part of Zipping Classic Day, the final instalment of the 2014 spring racing carnival.

Despite being a listed race, the 2014 Sandown Cup has attracted a classy field of 12 stayers due to its large $150,000 prize pool and two mile distance. Headlining the field is the Saab Hasan-trained Shoreham.

The five-year-old gelding will enjoy an inside run from barrier two with Craig Williams as jockey. His spring campaign has been more miss than hit and he hasn’t recorded a win since September 2013 in the Listed Sofitel (1400m) but Shoreham remains a top contender for the Sandown Cup.

He finished fourth over the same distance back in May’s Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m) and enjoyed three Group races during the spring, including the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m).

Unchain My Heart was the winner of the Andrew Ramsden Stakes and also enjoyed a tilt in the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) last Tuesday. The mare is the only runner to back-up to the Sandown Cup after finishing 16th in the ‘race that stops the nation’. She will enjoy a start from barrier five with Craig Newitt to ride.

Robert Hickmott’s Massiyn will enjoy the inside run after scoring barrier one while Ken Keys Like A Carousel will have to overcome a start from the widest barrier.

Massiyn was second in the Listed Bendigo Cup (2400m) last time out while Like A Carousel won the Listed Harry White Classic (2400m) on September 27 before finishing third in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m). He needed to win the Lexus Stakes to earn a place on the field for the 2014 Melbourne Cup, but missed out to Signoff finishing sixth of ten.

Zanbagh, trained by Patrick Payne, is the only horse backing up from last weekend after finishing second last in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) on Emirates Stakes Day at Flemington. The mare was just off midfield in the beginning but simply didn’t go well enough and failed to offer any hope on the line.

Payne is confident she can turn it around in the Sandown Cup for a successful end to her 2014 spring campaign, which included a minor placing in the Benalla Cup (2046m) on October 5. She will enjoy a jump from barrier three with Glen Boss in the saddle once again.

Other horses running the 2014 Sandown Cup include Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) participant Renew and Waltzing To Win.
