Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Robert Hickmott’s Cox Plate runner-up Fawkner has been ruled out of a run in Saturday’s 2014 Zipping Classic field, the seven-year-old to be sent to the paddock instead.
Hickmott and owner Lloyd Williams dominated the race formerly known as the Sandown Classic with four-time champion and the now namesake of the event Zipping (2007-10) and had three entries for another shot on the weekend.
Their headline hopeful Fawkner however won’t be accepted when the field is released for the $350,000 Group 2 Deadly Design Zipping Classic (2400m) this morning, the son of Reset last seen running 10th to Protectionist in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on November 4.
Williams confirmed on RSN on Wednesday morning the multiple Group 1 winning grey would not run again this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and instead would be saved for an autumn return next year.
For the past two years Fawkner has had just the one run during the Melbourne Festival of Racing, both times appearing in the $400,000 Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m).
He was third behind the world’s best Black Caviar in 2013 and then a luckless seventh to Spirit Of Boom in the March showdown at Moonee Valley this year.
Zipping provided Williams with four of his six Sandown Classic wins over the years along with Legible (2003) and most recently Tanby (2012).
The goliath owner could still have two chances in 2014 however with his 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon and Caulfield Cup failure Sea Moon.
It is shaping up as a top edition of the Sandown Zipping Classic this year with some of the headline hopefuls in the weight-for-age classic including Darren Weir’s Moonee Valley Cup winner Prince Of Penzance on the seven day back-up after a Queen Elizabeth Stakes second last Saturday and Andrew Balding’s UK raider Lord Van Percy last seen running fifth in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) on October 11.
The Zipping Classic 2014 final field is due out shortly so stay tuned.
