A final field of 13 three-year-olds will tackle the mile on Saturday in the 2014 Sandown Guineas.
The Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) is one of six Group Races running at Sandown Racecourse this weekend, making up Zipping Classic Day which is the final leg of the 2014 spring racing carnival.
The Darren Weir-trained Stratum Star headlines the final field after scoring an inside run from barrier two with champion hoop Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle.
The three-year-old colt is in incredible form, not finishing outside the first three since March. Stratum Star has had a great spring campaign, winning three of his five starts and finishing second in the other two, and is on the attack to add the Sandown Guineas to his tally.
After disappointing finishes in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Henry Bucks Sires’ Produce (1400m) back in the summer, Stratum Star has slowly been making his way back up the class list. He won the Listed Yellowglen Vintage Stakes (1400m) and Listed Crown Lager Stakes (1400m) in October before finishing just a neck off Kermadec in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) last time out. This will be his first Group Two race since March when he finished second last but great form and an inside run has him tipped to perform much better.
David Hayes & Tom Dabernig will enjoy a dual-pronged attack in the form of Zululand and Petrology, both strong competitors for the race.
Zululand will need a little luck on his side as he jumps from barrier nine with Stephen Baster as hoop. The colt looked promising in the autumn after finishing second in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) however his six starts since then have failed to recapture that success. He’s run in such races as the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m), Group 1 BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m), and Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) over the past couple of months, but has failed to impress in any of them.
Petrology will have to overcome a wide start from barrier 13 with Nicholas Hall in the saddle. The colt is a last start winner after scoring the Listed TV Stakes (1800m) last Thursday on Crown Oaks Day.
Lord Aspen, who has won all four of his career starts as well as three barrier trials, will enjoy a start from barrier six with Matthew Neilson to ride. He is a last start winner of the Listed Hilton Hotels & Resorts Stakes (1400m) but this will be the gelding’s first black-type race.
Tom Hughes’ Chill Party, who was second to Petrology in the TV Stakes, will jump from barrier eight with Brian Werner as hoop while Paul Messara’s Rekindled Power, who won his maiden last time out, will jump from barrier 10 with Dwyane Dunn to ride.
