2014 Kevin Heffernan Stakes Field Features Fast ‘N’ Rocking

David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s in-form four-year-old Fast ‘N’ Rocking wears the number one saddlecloth in Saturday’s Kevin Heffernan Stakes 2014 at Sandown Racecourse on Zipping Classic Day this weekend.

The former star two-year-old is one of a dozen gallopers engaged in this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m), the weight-for-age showdown to run as Race 8 at 5:20pm (AEDT).

Drawn well in barrier four with Dwayne Dunn to ride, Fast ‘N’ Rocking shoots for his third win from five starts this campaign.

His last win was over 1200m at Moonee Valley on Manikato Stakes night, after which he was last seen running third behind Éclair Big Bang over 1400m at Flemington last Saturday on Emirates Stakes Day.

He’s on the short turnaround then but has a good draw, regular rider and so connections are hoping to strike while the iron is hot.

There’s just one last start winner in the Kevin Heffernan Stakes field this year with the Anthony Freedman-trained Reparations lining up from barrier seven with Nicholas Hall to ride.

A six-year-old son of Exceed And Excel, Reparations had his first run since a failed 15th to River Lad in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in Brisbane back in June when beating home a decent field first-up on Melbourne Cup Day in the Listed MSS Security Stakes (1200m) on November 4.

Also coming out of that run is the Peter Moody-trained runner-up Office Bearer.

Jumping from barrier three this weekend with Vlad Duric retaining the ride, the five-year-old stallion won his only other Sandown start in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1200m) back in March so has a nice lead-up race and form at the track boosting his credentials.

Moody is also represented in the Kevin Heffernan Stakes this year out in barrier 10 with Daniel Stackhouse’s mount Flamberge, the five-year-old coming off a fourth to Atmospherical in the Listed Dilmah Earl Grey Stakes (1000m) from Crown Oaks Day.

Also coming off a nice last start effort is the John O’Shea-trained Sydneysider Generalife in gate eight for James McDonald.

A winner of three on the trot during a strong winter campaign, the Lonhro gelding has run top four in all three of his runs this time in.

Two back he was third behind Lucky Hussler in the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) on Caulfield Cup Day before his last start third this time behind subsequent Emirates Stakes winner Hucklebuck in the Group 3 Yellowglen Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Derby Day.

Other notable Kevin Heffernan Stakes hopefuls include eight-year-old We’re Gonna Rock who was a multiple Group 1 placegetter in 2012 before his disappointing return two years later in the Dilmah (11th) on November 6, the Gerald Ryan-trained Group 2 performer Charlie Boy with the rails run from barrier one and Adelaide raider Nearest To Pin who has three wins over the distance.
