Taylor Could Rely on Magnifisio in Winterbottom Stakes 2014

Top Perth horseman Jim Taylor’s stable ace Barakey may only be a 50-50 chance of running in Saturday week’s 2014 Winterbottom Stakes, but he still could have a strong chance in the classic with Magnifisio stepping up.

A virus has thrown the Perth Summer Racing Carnival plans of seven-year-old Barakey into disarray, the 2012 Winterbottom Stakes champ still racing flat at Taylor’s last assessment over the weekend.

“He’s still not bright, and if he doesn’t improve in the next couple of days he will have to go out,” he said.

It is unlikely then that the galloper, last seen running a strong second behind Railway Stakes fancy Elite Belle in the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m), will be fit in time for this year’s $750,000 Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot on November 22.

While doubtful for the sprint feature, Barakey is being kept safe in Winterbottom Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au occupying the third line of the markets at $8.

He trails only Robbie Griffith’s Manikato Stakes runner-up Angelic Light ($3.80) and last year’s runner-up behind Queensland great Buffering, Moment Of Change ($6).

Also at an $8 quote in the Winterbottom Stakes odds is then Taylor’s other chance in the race, Magnifisio, the five-year-old Magnus mare coming off a win in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) at the track last Saturday.

The Lee Steere was the mare’s first race in Group 2 company and came on the back of a nice first-up fourth in the Prince Of Wales Stakes.

Earlier in the year she proved her class with wins in January’s Summer Scorcher, the Northam Toyota Stakes and the Group 3 Roma Cup (1200m).

While handling the 1400m of the Lee Steere without issue, Taylor confirmed that Magnifisio would be dropped back down in distance next start for the Winterbottom Stakes where she’ll make her Group 1 debut.

“That will be her next start,” he told Perth Racing on Saturday.

“I stepped her work right up, she is 10 kilos lighter today than she was two weeks ago.”
