2014 Railway Stakes Weights Released – Non-Acceptor Allocated 59kg

The Peter Moody-trained Moment Of Change has been allocated the 59kg top weight for the Railway Stakes 2014 but will miss the race for a shot at Winterbottom Stakes atonement at the same meeting instead.

Full handicaps were released today for Saturday week’s $1 million Group 1 Carlton Draught Railway Stakes (1600m) running at Ascot Racecourse on November 22, the same day as the $750,000 Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).

Last Perth Summer Racing Carnival Moody’s multiple Group 1 weight-for-age champion Moment Of Change ran a close second to Queensland super sprinter Buffering in the Winterbottom.

Connections then will target the same race this season with Moment Of Change not to be accepted for the Railway Stakes.

The early $5.50 in futures Railway Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, The Cleaner, then will carry the 58kg top weight in the classic.

Mick Burles’s visiting Tasmanian galloper comes off a last start third to Hucklebuck in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington, enjoying the drop back in distance after a ninth in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley the run before.

Following The Cleaner in the Railway Stakes weights are then:

  • Moriarty (57kg) – Chris Waller’s recent Craven Plate winner in Sydney was a disappointing 14th to the ill-fated Admire Rakti in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) before a Mackinnon Stakes eighth behind Happy Trails on November 1. Down in distance here and has a good mile record (8-3-1-0). Perth should also be easier.
  • Hooked (56kg) – John Thompson-trained Casino Prince four-year-old won the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley two back before last weekend’s brave fifth to Hucklebuck in the Emirates Stakes, also over the mile with 56kg.
  • Lucky Hussler (56kg) – Darren Weir’s Emirates Stakes runner-up has been kept safe in betting sitting as the $6 second favourite in the markets but connections have confirmed he won’t be backing up and will instead be spelled ahead of an autumn return.
  • Smokin’ Joey (56kg) – Upset 40-1 winner of The Goodwood in Adelaide, Wez Hunter’s seven-year-old has been out of form since including two last start sevenths behind Hucklebuck in the Yellowglen Stakes and the Emirates Stakes.

Also above the 53kg minimum are the likes of Tony Gollan’s Yellowglen Stakes runner-up Alma’s Fury (55.5kg), the returning Adam Durrant-trained 2012 Railway Stakes winner Mr Moet (55.5kg) who hasn’t raced since December last year and is the highest-weighted local hope, the Fred Kersley-trained Kingston Town Classic winner Ihtsahymn (54.5kg) who was runner-up to Respondent in the WATC Derby back in April, and $8 third fancy Elite Belle (53.5kg) who won the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) first-up.

As for the light weight chances in the race the best fancied in the all-in Railway Stakes odds are Paula Wagg’s last start Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes winner Balmont Girl ($9), third in that same race Respondent ($10) and his stable mate Amorino ($15) – all getting in on just 53kg.

See below for the full Railway Stakes 2014 weights, not including any horses already withdrawn from the race.
