Lloyd Williams is keen to win his seventh Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m) in the span of just 12 years, entering both Green Moon and Fawkner into the race at Sandown this Saturday.
Winning the race is extra special for Williams, considering it’s now named after his former great horse Zipping, who won the race four years in a row. He told TVN on Sunday he would enter both his runners for the race, though a decision on whether they ride won’t be made until Tuesday following their track work.
Williams has also won the Sandown/Zipping Classic with Legible in 2003 and Tanby in 2012.
Fawkner has emerged from the 2014 Melbourne Cup in reasonable condition, according to the owner. The gelding was very forward in the race and there to challenge, though he got swamped both inside and out – finishing 10th to Protectionist.
Green Moon meanwhile had an issue with his hoof, which saw him non-accept for the $6.2 million feature race. His last start was in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 18, in which he finished ninth to Admire Rakti. He was midfield on the rails but saved many lengths going to the inside. He looked a big chance at the turn but his run just came to an end at the 100m.
While both will feature among the 2014 Zipping Classic nominations, a final decision won’t be made until after the horses work on Tuesday.
Williams also noted that Sea Moon, who was scratched from the Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) with an elevated temperature, will be nominated for the $150,000 Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) also on Saturday.
“We thought he may have something wrong with him, but he seems okay now,” Willians said to TVN.
“We’ll work him Tuesday morning and if he works okay then the Sandown Cup over two miles would probably be quite good for him.”
Nominations for both races at Sandown are set to be released later this morning, so keep checking back at Races.com.au for all the latest news and updates.
