Nigel Blackiston has big plans for his newest stable star come autumn, revealing Suavito’s 2015 autumn racing campaign could cover three states.
While the Group 2 Momentum Energy Stakes (2000m) winner at Flemington on Saturday will be sent straight to the spelling paddock, her trainer is already eyeing off Group One races for next year with both the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) and Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on the cards.
“She will go straight for a break now, then when she comes back I’ll look at giving her one run in Melbourne before we head to Sydney for the carnival up there,” Blackiston told Racing Network on Monday.
“We’ll look at the Coolmore (in Sydney) then I think we’ll hold her back a little and go to Queensland for the Stradbroke.”
The four-year-old mare has had an action-packed 2014 spring racing season. After winning the Catanch’s Jewellers Plate (1400m) and finishing just a nose off Star Fashion in the Dalziel Racing Tile Imperial (1400m), Suavito was favourite to win the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) on October 4, however she never even left the barriers.
The appears to have been a one-off freak occurrence however, since she finished third in the Group 3 Ladies Day Vase (1600m) 11 days later. The mare then finished her season with back-to-back wins in the Group 3 Eliza Park International Stakes (1600m) and Momentum Energy Stakes.
The Brisbane Turf Club announced last week that the 2015 Stradbroke Handicap would carry an unprecedented $2 million in prize-money, up $62,000 from this year’s race. This news will make the race highly attractive for the best horses in the country and it’s no wonder Blackiston wants to add it to Suavito’s campaign.
“We were really proud of her campaign and she seems to have taken her performance to a new level, so in the autumn we’ll give her a chance at the better races,” Blackiston said.
