Yet to finish outside the places in her short racing career so far, leading jockey Hugh Bowman is confident in a successful performance from classy three-year-old Set Square in this afternoon’s featured Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington.
Running a credible third in the Buloke Times Plate (1354m) on debut on September 15th, Set Square has secured impressive form leading into the Crown Oaks in winning a maiden event over 1600m) on October 8th before repeating the dose in the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) last time out on October 18th.
Yet to partner the Reset filly competitively, Bowman told Racing Victoria he has been thrilled with the feel offered up by the three-year-old in two recent hit-outs and is teeming with confidence leading into the 2014 Crown Oaks.
“My filly has raced her way into the race and obviously she’s a late nomination, so she snuck in under the radar but she wouldn’t be there if she wasn’t up to it,” Bowman said.
“I’ve ridden her twice; I rode her in a maiden gallop leading up to her win last-start and I went and worked her Saturday morning; she’s a real Oaks type, real staying pedigree and moves very well, so she ticks all the boxes.”
Having partnered three-time Group 1 winner Samantha Miss to Crown Oaks glory in 2008, Bowman is confident barrier 2 offers Set Square the perfect avenue for a successful tilt this afternoon.
“It’s a hard race, there’s four or five genuine winning hopes this year, which is unusual, but it’s good to be on one of them,” Bowman added.
“It’s been a good race to me, not as good as the Derby but we’ll work on that.”
