Conners Confident in Crown Oaks Outsider Yesterjoy

While undoubtedly facing her biggest racing test to date this afternoon, trainer Clarry Conners is confident outside hopeful Yesterjoy is displaying the form and class necessary of a Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) winner.

Claiming just one race win from her five competitive appearances on course so far, Yesterjoy was unlucky to be blocked for a run and hampered early in the final straight of the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington last weekend, but managed to recover enough to place a credible fifth amongst a field containing several of her confirmed Crown Oaks rivals.

Kept away from racing over the Autumn Carnival after failing to perform over shorter distances in barrier trials as a two-year-old Conners is confident the 2500m trip will be no issue for the More Than Ready filly and is expecting a positive and competitive result in the 2014 Crown Oaks.

“Yesterjoy has done really well and the 2500 metres will suit. All she wants to do is stay,” Conners told AAP.

“She was very immature and wasn’t doing much in 800 metre trials.

“It wasn’t until we got her up over further she showed something.

“At this time of the year so early in the season you don’t really know which ones can get the 2500 metres in an Oaks but I think she will.”

Finishing fifth in a minor over 1400m on debut and sixth in the Go The Panthers Handicap Maiden (1500m) on September 25th, Yesterjoy stamped her claims as a serious staying contender when winning the Pace Farm Plate Maiden (2000m) on October 12th, but was unlucky to be blocked for a run and held up when finishing a disappointing eleventh in the Listed Geelong Classic (2200m) on October 22nd in what was her only other start prior to the Wakeful Stakes.

Allocated the somewhat wide barrier 11, Yesterjoy has been confirmed to be partnered by veteran jockey Jim Cassidy in the 2014 Crown Oaks and is currently available at particularly generous odds of $41 for success or $10 to figure in the places with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
