The 2014 Melbourne Cup Carnival comes to a close on Saturday with Emirates Stakes Day. The day’s action kicks off with the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m), one of five Group races of the day.
A final field of 14 two-year-olds will contest the race, with only four of the runners having any previous starts. This will be the maiden career race for many of the juveniles, who could be ones to watch come next season as three-year-olds.
Because of this, picking a winner is made a lot more difficult with no past form to go by. Just four of the runners are offering single figure odds in the Maribyrnong Plate betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, led by Bantam at $3.
The John O’Shea-trained colt will wear the royal blue silks to represent Godolphin in his first career start. He impressed in a barrier trail at Warwick Farm on October 27, winning a cool one length ahead of his closest rival on the field. Hoop Hugh Bowman will ride Bantam from barrier eight.
However, there are three other single figure hopefuls who could beat Bantam home in the 2014 Maribyrnong Plate.
- #2 Iceflow ($5) – Matthew Ellerton & Simon Zahra’s colt is one of only four last start winners, and the only one offering single figure odds. Iceflow was runner-up in the Listed Maribyrnong Plate Trail (1000m) on October 4. He missed out on the win to Mihalic by just ¾ of a length. He will get the widest start after drawing barrier 14 with Damian Lane to ride.
- #13 Sailing By ($5) – the Mick Price-trained filly is the market mover of the field after her price shortened from $6 to $5. She has no career starts or barrier trails to date to judge her form by but will start from barrier 12 with Damien Oliver as hoop.
- #10 Belhamage ($5.50) – John O’Shea’s other Godolphin juvenile in the race is Belhamage, who rounds out the single figure odds in the Maribyrnong Plate. Like Sailing By, the filly is making her debut with not even one barrier trail to judge her performance on. She is set to jump from barrier 10 with James McDonald in the saddle.
With an additional ten runners offering lucrative double digit odds, this race could easily be won by an outsider. However, it’s just hard to pick the winner when it comes to juvenile races. Maybe Prompt Return ($11) will continue his winning streak after taking out the Elmore RC 2YO Maiden Plate (900m) at Bendigo on October 18.
