Atmospherical Zooms Home to Win Dilmah Earl Grey Stakes 2014

Peter Moody’s Angel Beach was favourite to win the Listed Dilmah Earl Grey Stakes (1000m) yet the mare couldn’t even finish in the first three.

Atmospherical was the market mover at Ladbrokes.com.au, offering odds of $4.60 just before the race and the four-year-old mare paid off for punters, zooming home to victory ahead of Consorting and Straight Gold.

Angel Beach jumped well while Fab Fevola dashed to the lead, however it was quickly over as Atmospherical eased over the heels and led down the straight all the way home, sweeping the race.

Two good mares had already won easily up the straight during Crown Oaks Day with Atmospherical joining them after winning the 2014 Dilmah Earl Grey Stakes. The young mare made easy work of her older rivals once Rocky King let her through at the straight.

Whiz kid James McDonald rode the lightly-raced mare to victory in a comfy ride, taking his win tally to four of the last 10 races.

Speaking directly after the race, the hoop spoke highly of the mare with plenty ahead of her.

“She had a great turn of foot for sure, she relaxed well and had a good speed in the race giving me a lovely run,” he said.

“She was just too good for them, you know? She’s really progressive, only had the nine starts but her record speaks for itself. She keeps herself in a rhythm which really helped.”

The winning trainer David Pfeiffer had nothing but praise for Atmospherical following the race.

“She’s always been a handy filly who just keeps getting better with age,” he said

“The race was always a bit of a query down the straight for the first time coming into a new state but she proved herself well. James rode her perfect and she looked the winner a long way out.

“She really seems to love the hot tempo, and I love the way she keeps improving for us. She’s got great pedigree and a great bunch of owners involved.”
