The Group 3 G.H. Mumm Stakes (1100m) is one of three Group races running at Flemington this afternoon, making up the Crown Oaks Day or Ladies Day as it’s commonly called.
14 mares are set to contest the race, after six were scratched in favour of races on Emirates Stakes Day this Saturday. Five of those mares are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, with Bounding ($4.60) and Shamal Win ($4.80) contesting favouritism.
Vain Queen ($5) opened as favourite but money has been coming in for market mover Shamal Wind, who has shortened from $7 to her current price.
Will one of the single figure hopefuls justify their favouritism and win the 2014 G.H. Mumm Stakes? Or will one of the outside shots cause an upset? Check out our betting tips for the race below.
#5 Bounding ($4.60)
Ken & Bev Kelso’s four-year-old is the current favourite to win the G.H. Mumm Stakes after finishing first two in 12 of her 13 career starts. She broke her streak last time out in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) in which she finished last. However it was still a very strong run, just 2½ lengths off the winner Lankan Rupee. She’s a sprint star, having won at the highest level after taking out the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1200m) last January, and should run the Mumm with ease.
#1 Miracles Of Life ($7.50)
Four-year-old mare Miracles Of Life seems to be flourishing under the care of her new trainers Peter & Paul Snowden. She was spent after the pair bought her, finishing end of the field in the Group 1 Goodwood (1200m) back in May so was given a long spell. After a long, slow preparation she returned for a dead-heat win in the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m) on October 18, alongside Bel Sprinter. The mare looks ready to once again be the racetrack darling as she’s got the quality and ability to become highly competitive once more.
#4 Shamal Wind ($4.80)
Robert Smerdon’s five-year-old mare is the market mover of the field after shortening from $7 to her current price. She has seen a lot of support coming in from punters after finishing third in her last three starts. The mare hasn’t won since February in the Listed W.J. Adams Stakes (1000m) but strong finishes in the Group 3 Sportingbet Sprint (1200m), Group 3 Sportingbet Series Final (1200m), and Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m) indicate she finish in the money. She missed out on the win to Bel Sprinter and Miracles Of Life by just a neck last time out.
