The final Melbourne Cup Carnival race day is this Saturday’s Emirates Stakes Day at Flemington with the day’s racing action kicking off with the two-year-olds in the Maribyrnong Plate 2014 field.
Running as Race 1 at 12:20pm (AEDT) this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) features a final field of 14, only four of which have had a previous race start.
Heading the field with the number one saddlecloth is the Danny O’Brien-trained Prompt Return, due to jump from a nice barrier four draw with James Winks in the saddle.
The Beneteau colt debuted at Bendigo over 900m on October 18 and won by a length in an effort he’ll be out to repeat here when stepped up in grade and distance at a major spring meeting.
Matthew Ellerton & Simon Zahra then saddle-up a runner-up on debut in Iceflow who has his work cut out for him with the outside barrier on Saturday.
Damian Lane will ride the locally-trained Hard Spun colt who had his first run in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial (1000m) at this track and distance on October 4.
There he was just three-quarters of a length off the winner Mihalic and should be improved off the run.
The other two runners on Saturday with previous race experience are then the Tom Hughes-trained Mister Miyagi in barrier three and the rails-drawn Hello Hornsby.
Choisir colt Mister Miyagi ran fourth behind rival for Saturday Prompt Return in the Bendigo maiden last month and will be out to turn the tables on his last start conqueror then having been beaten just over three lengths.
Cameron Templeton’s Cranbourne-based filly Hello Hornsby is the most experienced of the bunch with two lead-up runs.
The first was a second to Prompt Return at Bendigo then she finished four and a half lengths away fifth to $41 outsider Antelucan in the last at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday when up in class for the Group 3 Emirates Airline Plate (1000m).
Trial winners debuting in the race then include another son of Beneteau in Jacqueric (barrier 11) from Seymour, Andrew Noblet’s Hincinbrook colt Old Trieste (barrier six) and the John O’Shea-trained Exceed And Excel colt Bantam (barrier eight).
Number one trainer for Godolphin Australia, O’Shea and the stable also saddle-up Exceed And Excel filly Belhamage from barrier 10 with James McDonald to ride.
Also dually represented is then co-trainers David Hayes & Tom Dabernig who have young fillies New Summer Night (barrier five) and Shining Brooke (barrier two) in the mix.
