The John O’Shea-trained Contributer has opened narrow favourite in the Emirates Stakes 2014 odds ahead of this Saturday’s final Melbourne Cup Carnival meeting at Flemington Racecourse.
Se to run as Race 7 at 4:20pm this weekend’s $1 million Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) features a capacity field and four of the hopefuls are under double figures in the early markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Sitting top of the Emirates Stakes betting markets at $5, after firming in from $6 minutes after markets were released, is High Chaparral stallion Contributer.
Drawn ideally in barrier two with James McDonald to ride the five-year-old is having just his second run down under being imported from Europe.
The former UK-trained galloper had his final run back home in June for a black-type win over 2011m before debuting in Australia off a four month break on October 18 at Caulfield.
There McDonald rode him for a nice one length effort in the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) where he did his best work late racing away over the final few hundred metres in an effort he’s out to repeat at Flemington when back down to a mile.
Contributer has never run over a mile having done all of his racing over 1700m and above aside from a debut over 1400m in July 2012 but is being kept safe in betting by the bookies.
The other single figure hopes are then:
- #7 Hucklebuck ($6.50) – Phillip Stokes’ Adelaide raider gets barrier five here as he steps up in class facing his first Group 1 field since a sixth in the Stradbrokes Handicap in Brisbane back in June. Two runs this season are both black-type wins, the first at home over 1200m then at Flemington on Derby Day in the Group 3 Yellowglen Stakes (1400m) in a nice lead-up to this weekend’s major.
- #5 Hooked ($7) – Plenty to like about the in-form and well-drawn John Thompson-trained Casino Prince four-year-old who will get the run of the race from barrier four. Won a Group 3 at Newcastle in September, was a fast finishing third at big odds in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 4 then won the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) last time out on Cox Plate Day. Was too good then and could prove the same here with Craig Williams staying on.
- #11 Bull Point ($7.50) – Chris Waller-trained Fastnet Rock stallion to be ridden by Damien Oliver, was third a little while back in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and then sixth in the Toorak up over a mile which he saw again when runner-up to Hooked at Moonee Valley in the Group 2 last time out.
- #2 The Cleaner ($9) – Spruik Tasmanian galloper was in flying form leading up to the Cox Plate when winning three on the trot at MV before his ninth in the main event from a wide barrier in the WFA classic. Handicap sees him carry 58kg top weight but better barrier (6) as he is also down in distance.
Outside the top hopes the only other two runners under $20 are then the Team Hawkes-trained Doomben Cup runner-up Leebaz ($10) in barrier three, and the rails-drawn Speediness ($15) coming off a Toorak Handicap second and fourth to Hooked in the Crystal Mile.
