2014 Melbourne Cup Trainers to Back

Behind every Melbourne Cup winner is a Melbourne Cup winning trainer and with the countdown on until the 2014 Melbourne Cup lights up Flemington Racecourse as Race 7 at 3:00pm (AEDT) this afternoon, here we take a look at the trainers to get behind for the win.

Precedence

Precedence is prepared by the most successful Melbourne Cup trainer of all time – Bart Cummings. Photo: Race Horse Photos Australia.

There are 22 horses left after two early scratchings from this year’s $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m), and 18 Melbourne Cup trainers.

Three trainers will saddle-up more than one hope in the ‘Race That Stops a Nation’ this year with:

  • Chris Waller: #8 Junoob, #12 Who Shot Thebarman and #20 Opinion
  • Johnny Murtagh: #9 Royal Diamond and #11 Mutual Regard
  • Peter Moody: #16 Brambles and #19 Lidari

Of those the shortest priced in the Melbourne Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is Auckland Cup winner Who Shot Thebarman ($21), out to hand the in-form Waller with his first win in the world’s richest handicap.

Sydney’s leading horseman, Waller has saddled up six Melbourne Cup starters over the years with his best result being a fourth in 2012 with Kelinni behind the winner Green Moon.

Of course the most successful Melbourne Cup trainer in history is the ‘Cups King’ Bart Cummings who has prepared 12 winners, most recently in 2008 with Viewed.

Cummings now trains in partnership with his grandson James and the duo are represented in this year’s Melbourne Cup field by Precedence ($81) looking to become the first Melbourne Cup winner in history from barrier 18.

Below we take a look at the latest Melbourne Cup 2014 trainers’ stats including which trainers have won the two mile classic before, who trains today’s favourites at Ladbrokes.com.au and all the other info you need to place the winning Melbourne Cup bets this afternoon!
