Run as Flemington Race 7 at 3:00pm (AEDT), this year’s $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) was a truly historical event.

The Andreas Wohler-trained Protectionist became the first German-trained horse to win world’s richest handicap, jockey Ryan Moore was the first hoop since Greg Hall in 1992 to ride two different horses to a Cox Plate and then Melbourne Cup victory in the same year, and runner-up Red Cadeaux became the first triple Melbourne Cup runner-up since the race was inaugurated in 1861.

It was also a sad finish for the race favourite Admire Rakti who died post-race after crossing last in ‘The Race That Stops a Nation’.
