Melbourne Cup Odds Continue to Firm for Araldo

Steadily building to the task over four starts this time in, classy German import Araldo’s 2014 Melbourne Cup odds have continued to shorten all week as a guaranteed start in the Race That Stops a Nations has drawn closer, and appear likely to firm more with confirmation of a berth on Saturday morning.

Securing a commendable record over four wins and a further six minor places from his 15 competitive appearances on course so far, Araldo figured at Melbourne Cup odds of $41 as recently as last week; cutting into a quote of $21 earlier this week before resting at current $19 odds on Friday; figuring as sole occupant of the eighth line of betting.

Pleased with the form and classy displayed by the son of High Chaparral since returning to racing this spring, trainer Mike Moroney is confident Araldo is more than capable of performing over the two miles of the Melbourne Cup.

“I was happy with it,” Moroney told Newscorp of Araldo’s run for fifth in the Caulfield Cup.

“His last two starts, the Caulfield up and the Metropolitan, he’s been drawn very wide and had to go back.

“He’s run well twice now at the mile-and-a-half, so he’s in the right sort of form. He’s pulled up super.”

Stamping his claims as a serious racing contender when finishing second in two minors over 2400m and 2100m respectively in Germany on debut in 2011, Araldo continued to impress when taking out each of his first three starts in 2012, including the Listed Des Casino (2800m).

Running third in the Group 1 Preis Von Europa (2413m) and fourth in the Group 1 Gran Preimo Del Jockey Club Italiano (2413m) in Italy to conclude his 2012 campaign, the stallion out of Alanda beat just one runner home in his Australian debut in August last year, but quickly found his feet when winning the Listed Bart Cummings (2520m) and finishing third in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m).

Running seventh in the Listed Thoroughbred Bloodstock Stakes (1700m) first-up this time and sixth in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) on September 20th, Araldo announced himself as a serious Melbourne Cup threat when placing a close third in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) just two weeks prior to the Caulfield Cup.

The final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Melbourne Cup is due to be confirmed this evening.
