Hucklebuck Takes Out 2014 Yellowglen Stakes

Classy pre-post favourite Hucklebuck has justified his resounding support from punters at Flemington this afternoon, displaying a keen turn of foot in the final straight to take out the Group 3 Yellowglen Stakes (1400m) with relative ease.

Jumping from the gates well, the Elvstroem gelding settled in prime position on the heels of early leaders Limes and Turquoise King who set a particularly quick tempo over the back straight and approaching the bend.

Perhaps pushing a little too far forward rounding the bend, Hucklebuck found a clear racing line leading onto the final straight and exploded from the pack, completing a strong sprint to find the line a length in the clear of Alma’s Fury and Generalife.

Jockey Dom Tourneur delivered a commendable ride on Hucklebuck for Yellowglen Stakes success this afternoon, and was pleased to deliver trainer Phillip Stokes a maiden Derby Day victory.

“I’m very happy with Phillip and the owner Thomas Li for continuing their support and faith in me, bringing me over here and I’m happy to get the job done for them,” Tourneur said after the Yellowglen Stakes.

“He’s still got to come in the coat, we’ve just sort of brought him up steady this time round and I think he’s still got a little bit more of him.”

Stokes was understandably pleased with Hucklebuck’s performance in the 2014 Yellowglen Stakes, but is yet to decide whether or not the four-year-old will progress to the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) on November 8th.

“It was good he won today, he deserved that win,” Stokes said after the race.

“Dom gave him a great ride – he got cover on him, that’s all we had to do; I didn’t care where it was and he trained on nicely from his first-up win and did the job.

“I think 1400m is as far as he wants at this stage. I did have him in the Emirates but I don’t know if we’ll go there so we’ll just see how he pulls up.

“I’ll have a talk to Thomas and it’s great to train a winner for him on Derby Day here too.”
