Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Trainer Chris Waller has drawn first blood on Derby Day at Flemington this morning, saddling classy three-year-old Kermadec to an exceptional race win in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m).
Jumping from the gates well, Kermadec settled in prime position on the heels of early leaders Our Vespa, Burning Passion and Manhattan Avenue, who set a noticeably quick tempo from the barriers and down the back straight.
Pushing forward to sit in third position and offered a clear racing line upon reaching the final straight, the Teofilo colt slowly spooled up and charged forward; reaching Stratum Star within the last 100m and poking clear to find the line a head in the clear; Manhattan Avenue maintaining for third.
Jockey Blake Shinn delivered a typically strong ride of Kermadec for victory in the Carbine Club Stakes, and is confident the three-year-old has the class to develop into a leading racehorse.
“He’s a horse that’s got plenty of upside – he’s very lightly raced,” Shinn said after crossing the line.
“He jumped really well today which he hasn’t done his past two, I was able to get in a great spot, I sat and waited because it’s a very strong head wind.
“When Stratum Star came out I was able to get on its back and wait for as long as I could and he dug deep, he’s a horse with plenty of promise.
“When he came around me I always knew he was the horse to follow and I just got on his back and he gave me a really good horse to chase and he knuckled down well.”
Waller was understandably pleased to chalk up the first winner on Derby Day and was quick to lay the praise on his talented entrant and a perfectly-timed ride by Shinn, immediately after the Carbine Club Stakes.
“You do feel the nerves; yeah we’ve got a big team, we’ve got a lot of chances but with that you’ve got to perform,” Waller said of winning the Carbine Club Stakes.
“It was a good run the second horse, but it was good to see our horse do everything right today – he jumped well whereas last start which was only his his second start in racing he missed the start.
“Blake got him to travel beautifully, and with good horses and good races such as Derby Day it all comes down to everything including a good ride.
“There’s no room for error on Derby Day and Blake nailed it.”
Securing his second race win in just his third appearance on course in the 2014 Carbine Club Stakes, Waller is yet to settle on the next point of call for Kermadec during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.
