Returning to racing in typically slick form this year, renowned German trainer Andreas Wohler is confident of a successful performance in the 2014 Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday for Protectionist following impressive trackwork at Werribee.
Securing a commendable race record of four wins and as many minor places from his nine competitive appearances on track so far, Protectionist will line up for the Melbourne Cup as a second point of call since arriving in Australia at the beginning of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, having finished a credible fourth in the Group 2 Herbert Power Quality (2400m) at Caulfield on October 11th.
Working over 1400m on Thursday, Wohler confirmed the hit-out as the final serious piece of work for the Monsun entire ahead of the Race That Stops a Nation, and is confident the four-year-old will arrive at the barriers in peak condition.
“He started to quicken from the seven furlong marker and did it easy; there was no pushing,” Wohler told The Age of Protectionist’s Thursday work.
“The three weeks has just been perfect and we could not with happier with his progress.
“He has tightened up bit still has the same weight so he lost maybe a bit of fat and put some muscle on.
“That was his last piece of work today and we were happy with that. Hopefully everything goes easy beforehand and we are looking forward to Tuesday.”
Confirming leading British jockey Ryan Moore will take the ride in the 2014 Melbourne Cup, Wohler believes his entrant is fairly treated in the weights and is confident the four-year-old is more than capable of performing with the allocated 56.5kgs.
“I think he is fairly handicapped for the race and hopefully he proves in on Tuesday,” Wohler said.
“Ryan is one of the best jockeys in the world and to have such a rider on board can be lucky because he knows all about the race and the contenders,” he added of last weekend’s Cox Plate-winning rider.
Finishing second in both the Listed Preis von Dahlwitx (2011m) and Group 2 Preis Der Badischen Unternehmer (2212m) first-up this year, Protectionist more than stamped his claims as a serious Melbourne Cup contender when comfortably finding the line in the Group 2 Hansa-Preis (2413m) and Group 2 Prix Kergorlay (3000m) prior to the Herbert Power.
